History of Providence

In 1636, Roger Williams founded Providence. Roger Williams got the land from the Narragansett Indians and established a new settlement with a premise on political and religious freedom. It is one of the oldest cities in the US. The land was named as “Providence” to thank God for protecting him when he was banished from Massachusetts.

Providence started to develop in 1680 with the establishment of a wharf to promote trade. In the 1700s, it was a major port city that made fortunes with whaling, shipbuilding and trade. With increase in trade, the city flourished and grew. The 1939 New England Hurricane destroyed the city with storm and gusts of wind of over 100 miles per hour.  In 1954, Providence again suffered damage due to Hurricane Carol in the Rhode Island.
